The Children's Room offers book discussion group opportunities for three different age groups. We feel that children can benefit greatly from reading a book and then discussing the story, writing style, theme, etc. of that book with a group of his/her peers.
BookMates
A reading club for kids in grades 1-3. The club meets one Tuesday per month.
Each session consists of a book discussion with theme-related activities and craft. Light refreshments are provided. Pre-registration is required. Copies of the selected book will be available at the children’s reference desk three weeks prior to the meeting
Nutmeg Book Discussion Group
A book discussion group for grades 4-6. The group meets once a month for 10 months and concludes with a party and voting for the best book for that year. Each month the group discusses one of the 10 nominees. The one hour meeting consists of discussion, a related activity or craft and refreshements. Please sign up and check out a book in the Children's Room. For current nominees click on the "Nutmeg Children's Book Award" link above.
Teen Nutmeg Book Discussion Group
A Teen Nutmeg Nominee Book Discussion Group (7th and 8th grades) is held one a month with pizza or dessert. Voting takes place every January for the best book selected as a winner by Connecticut’s Teens. Members read a book, discuss it over a meal or treat, and collect raffle prizes at the end of the hour. For current nominees click on the "Nutmeg Children's Book Award" link above. Registration into this group is by e-mail only, at earliest convenience, to Mrs. McNulty at: kmcnulty@avonctlibrary.info. Most of the attendees are 7th and 8th graders, although high school teens are welcome, too.
