In-person, by telephone or e-mail, a qualified, professional reference staff is ready to help with all information requests, research papers and projects. The staff provides assistance and instruction on the the use of online catalogs, information databases and the Internet, as well as reader's advisory, book discussion programs and maintains the Library and Town websites. 

The Library participates in the CONNECT online catalog provided by Library Connection, Inc.  through the vendor SIRSI.  CONNECT provides on-line access to region-state library collections, magazine indexes,  and a list of area clubs and organizations.

Wireless Internet Access

For users with their own laptop computers, access is available at all locations throughout the library and outside at the benches and picnic table. 

Vision Assist Computer

 Thanks to a generous donation by the Avon Lions Club, the Library has purchased a computer with a 21 inch wide screen monitor and ZoomText screen magnifier software for people with limited vision. You may enlarge text, change screen colors to eliminate glare and reduce eyestrain, enlarge the mouse pointer and text cursor so it’s all easier to see.  To reserve this computer and for an introduction to ZoomText by a reference librarian, call 860-673-9712.  

Computer Lab

The Children’s Room on the second floor has a computer lab area with eight public computers and one Macintosh computer.  All have library catalogs, high speed access to the Internet, online databases, children’s games, and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher).  Documents may be saved to diskettes or flash drives, but no downloading is permitted.  Printers are available for printouts at 15 cents per page.  Two catalog computers offer access to library catalogs and online databases.  There is one COLOR PRINTER in the Children’s Computer Lab.

Volunteers may be available by appointment if you need help using a mouse, setting up an e-mail account, or want some tips how to search the Internet.  To set up an appointment, call reference at 860-673-9712.

Homebound Services-Book delivery and pickup

The Avon Public Library offers volunteer delivery services to Avon residents who are homebound, temporarily or permanently, because of illness, disability or advanced age.   The patron must have a current Avon library card. Applications will be mailed to residents who do not have a card.
  
Residents may call the library at 673-9712 to register.  Ask for the homebound service at the Reference Desk.  A staff member will assist with the selection of materials.  All circulating library materials may be delivered.  These include books, music, magazines, audiobooks, DVDs, videos or large print books.   The lending period is the normal loan time, but users may call the Library to renew items if they are not on reserve.  The staff member will then call a volunteer.  The volunteer will be given the resident’s telephone number and address and will call to arrange a convenient time for delivery and/or pickup.
