Thursday, May 14, 2020 at 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Thursday mornings in May. You’ve already seen these films, it’s time to discuss them!
May 14 @ 11:00am – As Good As It Gets, USA 1997
Directed by James L. Brooks
A single mother and waitress, a misanthropic author and a gay artist develop a friendship after the artist is assaulted in a robbery. Melvin Udall (Jack Nicholson) is an obsessive-compulsive writer of romantic fiction who’s rude to everyone he meets, including his gay neighbor Simon (Greg Kinnear). But, when Simon is assaulted during a robbery and Melvin has to look after Simon’s dog, he begins to soften. While still not completely over his problems, Melvin finds he can conduct a relationship with the only waitress Carol (Helen Hunt) at the local diner who’ll serve him. Hunt and Nicholson both won Academy Awards for their performances in As Good As It Gets. Film is rated PG-13, 2 hours, 19 minutes; please watch it before attending the discussion.
All four films are available on Netflix. Watch the film on your own, and then Zoom in for a conversation on the dates listed above. Professor Bob Kagan, who teaches Communication at Central Connecticut State University and the University of Hartford, will lead the discussions via Zoom.
