Bob Kagan was Chair of the Communication Department at Manchester Community College for 30 years. In his “unretirement” he teaches Communication courses at Central Connecticut State University and the University of Hartford. He has been leading film discussions at the Avon Free Public Library for the past six years.
October 18- American Factory, 2019 Available on Netflix
In rust belt Ohio, a Chinese billionaire opens a factory in an abandoned General Motors plant, hiring two thousand Americans. Initial hope and optimism fade as the Americans try to meet to the demanding expectations of their Chinese partners. In 1980 New York, three young men, who were all adopted, meet each other and find out they are triplets who were separated at birth. Their quest to learn about their past leads them to some unexpected places in this riveting film that explores the range of human emotions. Watch the trailer here
November 1 – Time, 2020, Available on Amazon Prime
One of the most acclaimed films of the Sundance Film Festival, Time follows a woman’s quest to free her husband who is serving a 60 year prison term for bank robbery. Hailed as a “poetic ode to perseverance,” Time touches on universal themes such as love, penance and forgiveness. Watch the trailer here
November 8 My Octopus Teacher, 2021, Available on Netflix
Winner of this year’s Academy Award for Best Documentary, My Octopus Teacher features a diver whose connection to an octopus teaches him as much about himself as he learns about the octopus. Breathtaking cinematography is sure to captivate. Watch the trailer here
