We are transitioning this summer’s farmers market to a virtual-only presence. Maintaining public health and safety during COVID-19 for our patrons, our staff, and our volunteers is at the core of this decision.
We have consulted with our vendors, the Farmington Valley Health District, the Town of Avon, Connecticut Department of Agriculture officials, and neighboring farmers markets since COVID-19 emerged. We have attended webinars and conference calls to investigate current best practices. We have designed, redesigned, brainstormed, and thought creatively about how to deliver a public health focused farmers market experience this summer.
For our team, navigating crowd control, ensuring social distancing, and enforcing mask wearing are impediments to a satisfying farmers market experience. Everything we love about the market: running into neighbors, examining the products, zigzagging between booths, and socializing at the library, would be absent.
All of our adult programs at the Avon Library this summer, June through August 2020, will be held online, so our decision to make the farmers market virtual is consistent with that plan. Additionally, the Collinsville Farmers Market, our closest neighbor, will have a virtual-only presence this summer. (Read their release here).
We know you are disappointed. We love the farmers market as much as you do.
So what happens now?
There will be no physical market at the Avon Library on Mondays in July and August, 2020. Instead, our focus will be on getting you to visit the farms and farm stands that compose our market family. We’ll share stories about who these vendors are, what products they’re showcasing, and where they’re located. Many of them are offering curbside pickup, and some even have delivery! This is an entirely new way to experience the best that Connecticut farms have to offer.
We appreciate your understanding, and look forward to a healthy return in summer 2021.
Tina Panik, Farmers Market Manager, the Reference Department staff and market volunteers, and Glenn Grube, Avon Library Director
