The American West

For more than a century the idea of the American West has captivated the world. Unsettled territories, wide open spaces, the promise of riches and a new life have created the myths and legends. Join us for four films that explore the spirit and the people of the American West. View the films at home (check https://www.justwatch.com) for options) and join us for a Zoom discussion, led by Bob Kagan, at 7:00 pm on the following dates.

Bob Kagan was Chair of the Communication Department at Manchester Community College for 30 years. In his “unretirement” he teaches Communication courses at Central Connecticut State University and the University of Hartford. He has been leading film discussions at the Avon Free Public Library for the past five years.

April 7 – The Last Picture Show – Based on the novel by Larry McMurtry, this coming of age story perfectly captures life in a small Texas town in the early 1950’s. Featuring breakout performances by Jeff Bridges, Cybill Shephard, Timothy Bottoms and Cloris Leachman, this film defines an American classic. View the trailer here

April 14 – Unforgiven – Produced, directed and starring Clint Eastwood this revisionist western presents us with complex characters and upends the stereotype of the noble cowboy wearing the white hat. Morgan Freeman, Gene Hackman and Richard Harris support Eastwood in one of a handful of westerns to ever win a Best Picture Academy Award. View the trailer here

April 21 – Snow Falling on Cedars – Based on the David Guterson novel, this film tells the story of a Japanese American accused of killing a Caucasian fishermen. The story unfolds in 1950 in the Pacific Northwest, where anti-Japanese sentiment is still strong. Ethan Hawke, Sam Shepard and Max von Sydow bring their acting chops to this complex tale of love and murder. View the trailer here

April 28 – True Grit – Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, this 2010 adaptation of the Charles Portis novel features Jeff Bridges as US Marshall Rooster Cogburn. Hired by Mattie, played by 13 year old Hailee Steinfeld, to track down her father’s murderer, Bridges reinterprets the role played by John Wayne 40 years earlier in this gem of a movie.
