Join us for a film discussion series, “Set in the South”. All discussions will take place on Zoom at 7:00 pm.
Three Films that explore the American South and how it influences culture, race, ethnicity and the behavior of the people who live there. Note that each film captures Matthew McConaughey in a dramatically different role. (The reference department wanted to call this the WE HEART MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY series, but Bob said no). All discussions will take place on Zoom on Wednesdays at 7:00 pm.

October 12, Lone Star, 1996 – Set in a dusty border town on the Texas/ Mexico border, this overlooked gem by Independent Director John Sayles uses a murder mystery to explore the burden of history and relationships between Mexican Americans, Caucasians and African Americans. October 19, A Time to Kill, 1996 – Matthew McConaughey and Samuel L. Jackson sizzle in this adaptation of the John Grisham novel. Set in rural Mississippi, McConaughey plays an attorney who defends Jackson who has been charged with murdering two white men who raped his daughter. October 26, Mud, 2012 – Set on the banks of the Mississippi River in Arkansas, McConaughey plays a fugitive who encounters two young boys who befriend him and try to help him reunite with an old flame. Viewed by many critics as among McConaughey’s best work and often compared with Huck Finn. Mud is available at the library, and for rent on Amazon Prime. Watch the trailer here
Bob Kagan was Chair of the Communication Department at Manchester Community College for 30 years. In his “unretirement” he teaches Communication courses at Central Connecticut State University and the University of Hartford. He has been leading film discussions at the Avon Free Public Library for the past 6 years.
