Bob Kagan was Chair of the Communication Department at Manchester Community College for 30 years. In his “unretirement” he teaches Communication courses at Central Connecticut State University and the University of Hartford. He has been leading film discussions at the Avon Free Public Library for the past five years.

Cinema Paradiso, Italy, 1988 – Set in Sicily, just after WWII, this heartwarming story focuses on a young boy who falls in love with movies at his local movie house under the tutelage of the theater’s projectionist Alfredo. The Lives of Others, Germany, 2006 – Set in 1984 Germany, a Stasi agent finds himself caught up in the personal lives of a couple he is surveilling and learns as much about himself as he does about the couple. Taut, revealing and sometimes funny, this psychological drama won an Academy Award for Best International Film. Watch the trailer here

Rabbit Proof Fence, Australia, 2002 – Set in 1931, this film focuses on 3 young half caste Aboriginal girls who are determined to escape from their government run settlement “reeducation”  camp. They will navigate the 1800 hundred mile journey by following the rabbit proof fence through the desert. Watch the trailer here
