Take & Eat bag: snacks and candy from India!

Saturday, December 18, 2021 at 10:00 am - 4:45 pm

Who can sign up? Teens in Grades 7-12.

Limited supply of bags available. One bag per teen.

The pickup day for this Take & Eat bag is Sat. 12/18.
The library will be open 10am-5pm on Sat. 12/18; please arrive no later than 4:45pm to ensure you can enter and exit the library with enough time before closing. If you don’t show up by the end of day on Sat. 12/18, any unclaimed bags will be given out to teens in Grades 7-12, first come first served on Sun. 12/19.

Where to go to pick up your bag?

Bags will be located behind the 2nd Floor Children’s Desk. Check in with a Children’s Librarian, then pick your bag of Indian snacks and candy.

So what is in the bag?

Each bag contains 6 pieces of candy, snacks, or treats from India. Each bag is different. You can get candies flavored with Tamarind juice, or mango, or black pepper. Snacks might be a favorite biscuit, or a chikki (brittle) with jaggery.

*Signing up for a mystery bag of snacks is not recommended for those with any tree nut, gluten, soy, or other food allergies.* Virtually all items say some form of the message: processed on machinery that processes dairy, wheat, peanuts, treenuts, sesame seeds, Soya, Mustard, and Sulphites.

*Everyone age 2 and above must wear a mask at the Avon Free Public Library when picking up the bag.*

Fun facts:

Candy has its origins mainly in Ancient India. Between the 6th and 4th centuries BCE, the Persians, followed by the Greeks, discovered the people in India and their “reeds that produce honey without bees”. They adopted and then spread sugar and sugarcane agriculture. Sugarcane is indigenous to tropical South and Southeast Asia, while the word sugar is derived from the Sanskrit word sharkara.  Pieces of sugar were produced by boiling sugarcane juice in ancient India and consumed as khanda, dubbed as the original candy and the etymology of the word
