Bob Kagan was Chair of the Communication Department at Manchester Community College for 30 years. In his “unretirement” he teaches Communication courses at Central Connecticut State University and the University of Hartford. He has been leading film discussions at the Avon Free Public Library for the past six years.

December 7 – The Florida Project, 2017  

This gem of a film largely flew under the radar when it was first  released. Six year old Moonee lives with her mom in a low rent motel  in the shadow of Disney World. William Dafoe plays the manager of  the motel who bends the rules to help struggling families stay afloat.  This film features wonderful performances by Brooklynn Prince as  Moonne as well as Dafoe. Available from the library and streaming on Netflix.

December 14 – The Trial of the Chicago 7, 2020  

Aaron Sorkin wrote and directed this dramatization of the trial  stemming from the riots at the 1968 Democratic Convention.  Featuring an outstanding cast including Sacha Baron Cohen as Abbie  Hoffman, the film will take you on a trip down memory lane. Available  on Netflix. View the trailer here

December 21 – Worth, 2020  

The 9/11 Victims’ Compensation Fund – millions of dollars set aside  for the families of the victims. How do you disburse this money? How  do you place a value on a human life? What is the life of a janitor  worth? The life of a fireman? All thorny questions. Michael Keaton  and Stanley Tucci sparkle in this riveting tale. Available on Netflix. View the trailer here

December 28 – Passing, 2021 –

Based on a 1927 novella by Nella  Larsen, Passing focus on two childhood friends, reunited after 20  years. While both are Black, one has decided to “pass” and live as  White. This drama poignantly explores issues of race and self-identity.  Described as powerful and provocative. Don’t miss it. Available on  Netflix. View the trailer here
