Ginny Lowe Connors is the author of several poetry collections, including Toward the Hanging Tree: Poems of Salem Village. Her chapbook, Under the Porch, won the Sunken Garden Poetry Prize. She is the 2018 featured poet in the literary journal Passager. Connors has also edited a umber of poetry anthologies, including Forgotten Women: A tribute in Poetry, and, with co-editor Charles Margolis, Laureates of Connecticut. Connors writes a monthly feature for The Hartford Courant about area poets. She also operates a poetry press, Grayson Books. She is active in the Connecticut Poetry Society and writes its quarterly newsletter.
October 10: William Carlos Williams moderated by Mark Sheridan
Mark Sheridan is the Treasurer of the Connecticut Poetry Society, where he has been instrumental in fund-raising and expanding the Poets on Poetry series to five area libraries in addition to the flagship Hartford Public Library. Mark Sheridan was a Managing Director in the Investment Banking Division of J.P. Morgan for over twenty-five years. After retiring, he taught at risk inner-city students in Newark and Elizabeth, New Jersey. Sheridan has created an interactive poetry program which he leads on college campuses.
Maria Sassi, who was the first Poet Laureate of West Hartford, Connecticut, is a prize-winning poet and playwright. Her first poetry collection, Rooted in Stars, now in its second printing, is part of The Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University. Her chapbook What I See presents ekphrastic poems, three of which have won international poetry prizes: the René Magritte Prize and the Salvatore Dali Prize. For many years, Maria Sassi taught creative writing with an emphasis on poetry at Hartford College for Women/University of Hartford, and she has sponsored and hosted poetry events at several venues including the Noah Webster House, Hartford’s Old State House, and the Charter Oak Cultural Center. Her work has been much anthologized and published by many literary journals.
Christine Beck holds a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing degree from Southern Connecticut State University and is the author of Blinding Light (Grayson Books 2013), I’m Dating Myself, (Dancing Girl Press 2015) and Stirred, Not Shaken (Five Oaks Press 2016). She is the poetry editor of The Perch, a journal of The Yale Program for Recovery and Community Health. Christine Beck teaches poetry, creative writing and literature at The University of Hartford and in private workshops. She is a former president and current secretary of the Connecticut Poetry Society and directs its monthly Poets on Poetry series at which poets moderate a discussion about a well-known poet at area libraries.
