Walt Whitman has been called the “father” of American poetry. His expansive style, break with the rhyming tradition, and unabashed sexuality continue to gather fans and opponents. We will look at Whitman’s legacy and some of the poems that continue to live in American culture today. His work nursing Civil War soldiers and his elegy for Lincoln demonstrate a poet of social conscience. We will explore “I Hear American Singing.” “A Noiseless Patient Spider,” “O Captain, My Captain” and portions of Song of Myself.
