Tai Chi & Qigong Fundamentals
Experience the proven benefits of Tai Chi and Qigong – reduced stress and anxiety, better balance, focused and relaxed mental awareness, greater energy, improved immune and circulatory system performance, and more! Each class will include several relatively simple movements focusing on health and meditation aspects, while emphasizing foundational Tai Chi and Qigong techniques and principles. These practices have compact movements and high stances which are easy on the joints, improving their flexibility and mitigating arthritis and related conditions.
Qigong developed from more ancient Neigong (internal energy development) methods used by the Taoists of China to give them the physical and energetic strength required for lengthy meditation practices. Tai Chi is the combination of martial arts movements and (commonly called Gongfu or Kung Fu in the West) with the internal power techniques of Neigong.
It is most beneficial if you can attend the entire series of four classes, since new material will be introduced in each, but there will be some review in every class. The exercises are best learned and practiced standing but can be modified for sitting. Plan to wear loose, comfortable clothing and flat shoes, socks, or bare feet.
These classes are intended for adults (16 and older) but supervised younger children and teens may attend. Anyone with severe medical conditions, major injuries, and/or serious mental health issues should consult with appropriate health care providers before attending.
Certified Instructor Don Myers has 35 years of experience as a practitioner and teacher of Tai Chi, Qigong/Neigong, and Taoist Meditation methods. His main teacher is Taoist Lineage Master Bruce Frantzis (founder of Energy Arts). Don resides in Simsbury and is the owner of Great Pond Tai Chi. He also happens to be a Saturday Reference Librarian at AFPL.
