The Future of the United Nations … in the lens of Russian Invasion of Ukraine

Monday October 17 at 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us for an engaging presentation with the United Nations Association of Connecticut, which also serves as our Connecticut Commemoration of UN Day  2022.

The Future of the United Nations … in the lens of Russian Invasion of Ukraine

The United Nations was created to maintain international peace and security; protect human rights; deliver humanitarian aid, and support sustainable development and climate action.  How has the United Nations responded to the war in Ukraine which began February 24, 2022? What were its successes and failures? Do the weaknesses require a fundamental reincarnation of the UN as the League of Nations after WW1 became irrelevant?

Our featured speaker is Jeff Laurenti, Harvard, Princeton; Master of Public Affairs (MPA)Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. Extended United Nations engagement, who will be joined for a response by Dr. Sergei Kambalov.

Jeffrey Laurenti has served as executive director of policy studies at the United Nations Association of the United States (UNA-USA) and as senior fellow and director of foreign policy programs at The Century Foundation. He directed international task forces on peace-making in Afghanistan and on UNESCO, and was deputy director of the United Nations Foundation; United Nations and Global Security initiative that supported Kofi Annan; high-level panel on threats, challenges, and change. He has written on multilateral capacities for conflict resolution, human rights protection, environment, and international organization financing, and advised Democratic presidential campaigns on multilateral issues. Laurenti has served as public member of a State Department promotion board and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He earned his A.B. at Harvard College, magna cum laude, and his M.P.A. at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.

Dr. Sergei Kambalov retired from the United Nations on December 31, 2010. His last position was the Executive Coordinator of the United Nations Global Alliance for Information and Communication Technologies and Development.
