November 28, Parallel Mothers, 2021, Directed by Pedro Almodovar. Two women meet in a hospital room where they are about to give birth. Both are single and pregnant by accident. Little do they realize that this chance encounter will intertwine their lives in ways they could never have imagined. This film features a great performance by Penelope Cruz. December 5, The Duke, 2020, Directed by Roger Michell. Based on a true story that takes place in 1961 England, The Duke follows 60 year old taxi driver Kempton Bunton as he steals a painting from the National Gallery. Bunton agrees to return it if the government is willing to provide free BBC television for the elderly. The film is filled with warmth and humor as this improbable activist captures the admiration of much of England. The film features great performances by Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren. December 12, Bergman Island, 2022, Directed by Mia Hansen-Love. This film follows two American filmmakers who retreat to the mythical Fårö island for the summer. In this wild, breathtaking landscape where Bergman lived and shot his most celebrated pieces, they hope to find inspiration for their upcoming films. Spending their days wandering the island separately the lines between reality and fiction blur and tear the couple apart. This drama features excellent performances by Tim Roth and Vicky Krieps. Bob Kagan was Chair of the Communication Department at Manchester Community College for 30 years. In his “unretirement” he teaches Communication courses at Central Connecticut State University and the University of Hartford. He has been leading film discussions at the Avon Free Public Library for the past 6 years.
