SUMMARY:Morning Book Club: Virtual Author Event with Amy Jo Burns
DESCRIPTION:Join the Morning Book Club in this special Zoom author event with Amy Jo Burns to discuss her novel Wait for Me. \n(Amy Jo will join us virtually; readers will be in-person in the community room) \nCopies of the book and a reader’s guide will be available to check out ahead of time at the Reference Desk. \nPast participation is not required for this once-a-month book club. Everyone is welcome to join the low-key\, no long-term commitment\, friendly group. \n~~~ \nFrom the author of Mercury and Shiner comes an unforgettable novel about the bond between two female folk singers\, the love stories that haunt them\, and the music that brings them together to burn bright.  \nWhen young folk singer Elle Harlow reaches the height of her prowess in 1973\, she has two wildly beloved albums to her name and a hidden history of impossible heartbreak. After she sets foot on the famed Grand Ole Opry stage\, a far cry from the mountain that raised her\, Elle gives the biggest performance of her life. Then\, to the dismay of shocked fans\, her producer\, and the man who still loves her\, she vanishes. \nAlmost two decades later\, eighteen-year-old Marijohn Shaw is spending her summer pumping gas\, writing songs on her broken mandolin\, and longing for a mother. Her father Abe has always sworn he was the last person to see Elle Harlow alive\, but when a meteor strikes the woods of their sleepy Pennsylvania town and a piece of Elle’s past emerges from the wreckage\, the truth of her disappearance sets fire to everything Marijohn believes about herself\, her music\, and her ability to love with abandon. \nWait for Me exalts the lush hills of Appalachia and the bright lights of Nashville as it reveals the legacy of Elle Harlow: the bold voice that defined her\, the intimate betrayal that undid her\, and the unexpected faith of another young woman determined to resurrect her. \nAmy Jo’s new novel\, Wait for Me\, is the Today Show Read With Jenna pick for March 2026. She is the author of three other books\, including Cinderland\, Shiner\, and Mercury\, which was a Barnes & Noble Book Club Pick\, a People Magazine Book of the Week\, and an Editor’s Choice selection in The New York Times. A western Pennsylvania native\, she lives in New Jersey with her family. You can find her on Instagram at @burnsamyjo.\n\nPlease register so we can set the community room up with appropriate seating.

SUMMARY:When the Connecticut River Decided the Revolution (in-person)
DESCRIPTION:When the Connecticut River Decided the Revolution \nWe know that the CT River divides Red Sox and Yankee fans\, but did you know it also determined Connecticut’s revolutionary outlook?  There existed in the colony a distinct East of the River\, West of the River outlook on everything from economics to religion to land availability\, all of which shaped a violent and politically driven revolt on the part of the East. \nMatthew Warshauer is a professor of history at Central Connecticut State University\, where he has studied and written extensively on what he calls “the American paradox\,” the conflicting ideological beliefs and practices of the United States. Learn more here. \nThis is the first in a series of three; please register for each event separately. \nSeries funded by Pat Moran\, and sponsored by the Avon Historical Society\, Avon Library\, and Avon Senior Center. \nPlease register\, so we can set the community room up with appropriate seating.

SUMMARY:Sweet Spot/Author Event with Kemper Donovan (in-person)
DESCRIPTION:The USA Today bestselling host of the “All About Agatha” podcast injects the spark and fizz of a Golden Age Murder Mystery into the present day\, as a ghostwriter-turned-sleuth must find a devious killer who’s transforming her new assignment into a real-life thriller… \nGhostwriters\, just like ghosts\, shouldn’t exist. Knowing that the latest juicy memoir was penned by a stranger for a paycheck tends to ruin the illusion of intimacy. But not every ghostwriter is in it for the money alone. \nFor Belle Currer—as the ghostwriter extraordinaire prefers to be known—Genevieve Caraway’s memoir is an irresistible project\, a tale of tragedy overcome. At 14\, Genevieve was abducted from her bedroom by a couple and held hostage for three months. She’s now a happily married mother with a flourishing career\, a poster child for thriving after trauma. Still\, the scars haven’t entirely faded. \nGenevieve’s lavish Utah home\, “Sweet Spot\,” is a guarded compound impregnable to outsiders—theoretically\, at least. But Belle’s arrival coincides with the parole of Deirdre Gregory\, one of Genevieve’s kidnappers. When Deirdre shows up at Sweet Spot begging to see Genevieve\, she is refused. The next day\, Deirdre’s dead body is found on the grounds. \nHow did Deirdre get in? More importantly\, who killed her? Belle soon joins Detective Kay Adams\, the pregnant Mormon detective assigned to the case\, in sifting through the suspects. The compound is filled with family and friends—and also with secrets\, including one the ghostwriter has been carrying for far too long. She knows how guilt\, remorse\, and love can drive people to do unthinkable things. And that no matter how much you try to keep the world at bay\, the best and worst of it may find a way to get in . . . \nBooks will be for sale at this event. \nPlease register\, so we can set the community room up with appropriate seating.

SUMMARY:Single Girls: Author Event with John Searles (in-person)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a moderated conversation with John Searles to celebrate the release of Single Girls!\nWe’ll enjoy fun beverages and audience giveways. \nAbout Single Girls: \nShe made being single a movement — now\, her story gets its moment. \nIn 1965\, Helen Gurley Brown is fresh off the runaway success of Sex and the Single Girl\, her revolutionary call to single women not to rush into marriage on anyone’s timeline but their own—and\, more radically\, to enjoy their sex lives gloriously free of shame. Upon the book’s publication\, half the country is outraged (her mother\, for one\, hates the book)\, and the other half will follow her anywhere. Moved by the thousands of letters arriving at her doorstep from readers desperate for advice\, a determined Helen marches from one Manhattan magazine conglomerate to another\, looking for a perch from which to dispense her unconventional wisdom. At her last stop\, she finally gets her shot: just three issues to turn around the flailing magazine Cosmopolitan. \nShe quickly assembles a team of smart\, savvy “single girls” up for the challenge. Soon\, their lives become the stuff of magazine coverlines: the gorgeous Book Editor’s doomed romance with a man she didn’t know was married—and her audacious plan for revenge. The (unofficial!) Sex Editor’s trip to soak in the world’s first champagne-glass hot tub\, which goes spectacularly wrong. The Entertainment Editor’s clash with Joan Crawford and her interview with a Park Avenue call girl that leads to unexpected revelations. \nSINGLE GIRLS begins at the dawn of Helen’s legendary tenure and journeys back to her youth\, envisioning the devastations and people that shaped her into a controversial legend. With dazzling\, high-energy prose\, Searles captures not just a movement but a mood: one of ambition\, reinvention\, and the intoxicating thrill of being young when a new world was possible for a single girl if only she was fearless enough to reach out and grab it. \nJohn was a longtime Cosmo editor\, hired by Helen just out of graduate school\, making him the perfect person to capture the spirited and irresistible chaos of her reign. Part love letter to an old friend\, part celebration of a bygone-but-still-relevant era\, SINGLE GIRLS is a deeper look at a beloved and infamous American pop cultural touchstone in its unforgettable heyday. \nJohn Searles is the best-selling author of the novels Her Last Affair\, Help for the Haunted\, Strange but True and Boy Still Missing. \nHailed as “riveting” by The New York Times and “hypnotic” by Entertainment Weekly\, Boy Still Missing inspired Time magazine to name him a “Person to Watch\,” and the New York Daily News to name him a “New Yorker to Watch.” His second novel\, Strange but True was praised as “sinister and complex” by Janet Maslin of The New York Times\, “extraordinary” by Publishers Weekly\, and was named best novel of the year by Salon. Help for the Haunted was named a Boston Globe Best Crime Novel of the Year\, an Entertainment Weekly Top 10 Must List\, and won the American Library Association’s Alex Award. John’s most recent novel\, Her Last Affair\, was named a Best New Book by People magazine and praised as “a tense\, intricately woven tale of heartbreak\, retribution and redemption” by Publishers Weekly and “a twisted thriller that explores despair and loneliness with cinematic flair” by Kirkus Reviews. \nIn 2019\, Strange But True was adapted for film by the producers of La La Land and released in theaters nationwide by Lionsgate. Now streaming on HBOMax and Amazon Prime\, the film stars the award-winning ensemble cast of Amy Ryan\, Greg Kinnear\, Brian Cox\, Blythe Danner\, Nick Robinson and Margaret Qualley. The movie was praised as “suspenseful and haunting” by The Hollywood Reporter and “a twisty tale of tragic secrets” by the Los Angeles Times. \nJohn has appeared regularly on morning programs like NBC’s Today Show\, CBS This Morning\, Live! With Regis & Kelly\, NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross and CNN to discuss his books. \nFor 23 years\, John was the books editor of Cosmopolitan\, also serving as the magazine’s brand director\, executive editor\, and editor-at-large.  His personal and travel essays\, book and restaurant reviews have been published in the New York Times\, Washington Post and numerous other magazines\, newspapers and websites. He has a master’s degree in creative writing from New York University and lives in NYC. \nBooks will be for sale at this event. \nCocktails will be served: enjoy a Cosmo (if you’re over age 21) at this event. \nPlease register\, so we can set the community room up with appropriate seating.

SUMMARY:Jazz Age Murder: Author Event with Carolyn Marie Wilkins (in-person)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a in-person program: part author event\, part musical event\, with author Carolyn Marie Wilkins\, to celebrate the release of her newest book in the A Psychics and Soul Food Mystery Series.   \nAbout Let the Murderer Say Amen:  \nAs prosperity and great cultural changes sweep across 1920s Jazz Age America\, Nola Ann Jackson learns more about developing her natural psychic talents from her aunt—talents that prove crucial when she investigates murder in her Black community—in this thrilling historical mystery written by a real-life psychic medium and jazz pianist. \nThe people of Agate\, Illinois\, have welcomed Bishop Pius Amun Ra with open arms\, flocking to become congregants of his Temple of Righteous Revelation. He has won over the hearts not only of the Black churchgoers\, but of the city’s white political and wealthy elite. Bishop Ra is more than a preacher of the good word\, he is a faith healer\, blessed with the gift on the banks of the Nile during his youth in Egypt. His worshippers believe he can cure cancer—and even raise the dead.\nSequoia LaMarche was saved by Bishop Ra\, and the young white woman serves his church as a singer\, receiving death threats for her efforts. Despite Ra’s protection\, members of the Temple’s inner circle hold Sequoia in contempt\, including bodyguard Sam Constant\, who publicly accuses her of stealing money from the collection plate. After the confrontation\, Sequoia’s murdered body is discovered\, and Sam becomes the police’s number one suspect. \nNola is a good friend of Sam’s sister\, believing he’s innocent. Guided by her psychic instincts\, she conducts her own investigation\, uncovering secrets about the Bishop and the people closest to him\, including his wife. The leaders of the Temple are not as righteous as they claim. Their altruism masks sins they prefer buried. And when another murder occurs\, Nola must unveil the killer before she becomes the next victim . . . \nCarolyn Marie Wilkins is a Reiki master\, a psychic medium and a Professor at Berklee College of Music Online. A graduate of Oberlin Conservatory and the Eastman School of Music\, Carolyn has performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony and represented her country as a Jazz Ambassador for the U.S. State Department. An initiated priestess of Yemaya\, the African goddess of motherhood\, compassion and the ocean\, Carolyn has been ordained as a Practitioner of Esoteric Buddhism by the Bian Hua Gong Temple of Change and Transformation in Monterey\, CA. She also certificates in mediumship from the JVP School of Mystical Arts\, the British mediums Tony Stockwell and Mavis Pittilla. \n~~ \nBooks will be for sale at this event. \nPlease register\, so we can set the community room up with appropriate seating.

SUMMARY:Irena's Gift: An Epic WWII Memoir of Sisters\, Secrets\, and Survival/Author Event with Karen Kirsten (in-person)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an in-person event with Karen Kirsten\, to showcase Irena’s Gift. \nIf we seal off the past\, how will we ever know the truth? \n\n\nIn 1942\, in German-occupied Poland\, a Jewish baby girl was smuggled out of the Warsaw ghetto in a backpack. That baby\, Joasia\, knew nothing about this extraordinary event until she was thirty-two\, when a letter arrived from a stranger. She also learned that the parents who raised her were actually her aunt and uncle. Joasia kept this knowledge hidden from her own daughter\, Karen—until an innocent question revealed the truth. \nDetermined to understand the generational trauma that cloaked her family in silence\, her own origins\, and to help heal her mother’s pain\, Karen set out to unearth decades of secrets and piece together a hidden history\, and to find the answers to baffling questions: why did her adoptive grandmother treat Karen’s mother so unkindly? Why did she hide the truth that she was her mother’s aunt? And why\, if she appeared to dislike Karen’s mother\, did she risk her life to save her? \nIrena’s Gift weaves together a mystery\, history and memoir to tell the story of sacrifice\, impossible choices\, and the way trauma reverberates throughout generations. From the glittering concert halls of interbellum Warsaw to the vermin-infested prison where a Jewish woman negotiates with an SS officer to save her sister’s child–– Irena’s Gift is about the lies we tell to survive and what happens when those lies unravel. It is also a story of resilience and bravery\, revealing how love and hope\, too\, can not only prevail through the worst imaginable circumstances\, but resonate through time. \n\n\nAbout the author:  Karen Kirsten is the author of Irena’s Gift\, a 2025 National Jewish Book Award Finalist––described by judges as “reads like a thriller”––winner of Zibby Awards for Best Family Drama & Best Story of Overcoming\, and Australian Jewish Book Award finalist.   Karen is an Australian-American writer and Holocaust educator who speaks around the world on the power of empathy to bridge divides and save lives. Karen’s essay “Searching for the Nazi Who Saved My Mother’s Life” was selected by Narratively as one of their Best Ever stories and nominated for The Best American Essays. Her writing has also appeared in Salon\, The Week\, The Huffington Post\, The Jerusalem Post\, Boston’s NPR\, The Christian Post\, The Sydney Morning Herald and more\n\nBooks will be for sale at this event. \nCo-sponsored by the Avon Library and Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies.

SUMMARY:Sunlight Finds You/Author Event with Laura Moriarty (in-person)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an in-person presentation by author Laura Moriarty\, to celebrate the release of Sunlight Finds You.  \nA forbidden love blows open the world of a teenage girl\, altering the trajectory of her life–from the author of the New York Times bestseller The Chaperone.\n \nIt’s 1949\, early in the Cold War\, but St. Petersburg\, Florida is warm\, lush\, and booming with newcomers seeking sunshine and opportunity. For seventeen-year-old Nora\, St. Pete feels like paradise\, especially after she meets and wins over Leonard\, the shy\, brilliant son of transplanted New Yorkers. Nora and Leonard are soon spending balmy days and evenings together\, and in her adoring\, encouraging company\, he grows more confident\, even as he remains tender and caring. Leonard’s sophisticated mother welcomes Nora into their lives\, but his father distrusts her motives. \nWhen his suspicions are seemingly confirmed\, Nora is forced to cut contact. In her longing and fear\, she takes a chance that changes her life\, exiling her from the family she loves and setting off a chain of secrets and betrayals that will follow her into adulthood. It is a mature Nora who tells the story of her turbulent past. Wiser and more worldly\, she commits to an honest but compassionate account\, and to a future based on trusting\, first and foremost\, herself.  Sunlight Finds You is\, ultimately\, a love story set in the past that has much to say about our present. Richly layered and propulsive\, it’s a book about extending forgiveness–for ourselves\, and for others–and about refusing to settle for a life that is less than full. \n“The kind of book that makes you lean closer\, then hold your breath as the beauty and betrayal unfold. I couldn’t stop reading. I couldn’t stop hoping. What an extraordinary novel!” —Ariel Lawhon \nLaura Moriarty is the author of the national bestseller The Chaperone as well as The Center of Everything\, The Rest of Her Life\, and While I’m Falling. She received her master’s degree from the University of Kansas and was awarded the George Bennett Fellowship for creative writing at Phillips Exeter Academy. Moriarty lives in Lawrence\, Kansas. \nPlease register\, so we can set the community room up with appropriate seating. \nBooks will be for sale at this event.

SUMMARY:John Adams and Thomas Jefferson\, Their Historic 50 Year Friendship (in-person\, dramatic event)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a dramatic\, in-pereson event with actor George Baker. \nIn “John Adams and Thomas Jefferson\, Their Historic 50 Year Friendship\,” Adams describes how he and Jefferson first met in 1775 at the Continental Congress\, one a delegate from Massachusetts\, the other a delegate from Virginia. They were the principal moving forces which convinced the Continental Congress to vote for independence in 1776. After the Revolutionary War\, they were fellow ambassadors from the United States with Adams serving in England at the Court of St. James’s and Jefferson in Paris. In 1796 and 1800 they competed as presidential candidates\, Adams a Federalist and Jefferson a Republican. Adams won the election of 1796 but lost to Jefferson in the election of 1800 which was marred by a rough campaign where each candidate was personally attacked in the press. Though the bitter feelings from that campaign affected their friendship\, they were finally reconciled in the last fourteen years of their lives during which time they wrote 155 letters to one another. Both died on July 4\, 1826\, the 50 th anniversary of the United States\, an unparalleled historical coincidence. \nSince 2008\, George Baker has portrayed the character of President John Adams in a one-man show throughout the country at national conventions and venues like Mystic Seaport in Connecticut\, the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library in Kansas\, the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library in Texas\, the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library in Missouri\, the New-York Historical Society and was featured as John Adams on National Public Radio’s weekend program\, Studio 360. A graduate of Columbia College and Columbia Law School\, George practiced law in Connecticut from 1973 to 2024. John Adams was born in Braintree\, Massachusetts in 1735 and practiced law in Boston where he represented fourteen British soldiers charged with murder in the Boston Massacre of March 1770\, a case which is the first recorded instance in Colonial America that the judge instructed the jury that they cannot convict unless they are convinced of the defendants’ guilt “beyond a reasonable doubt.” In 1774 he was chosen to be one of the five delegates from Massachusetts to the Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia. In 1776\, he was one of the Congress’ most strenuous advocates for American independence from Great Britain. Later he served as ambassador from the Continental Congress to Paris\, Holland and London and was Vice President in the administration of President George Washington. In 1796\, he was elected the second President of the United States. \nPlease register so we can set the community room up with appropriate seating. \nThis event is appropriate for ages 12+ \nSponsored by the Avon Library\, Avon Historical Society\, and Avon Senior Center.
