What is Book Buddies?
Big Buddies are teen volunteers in Grades 7-12. You will get paired with your own Little Buddy in Grades K-3.
What do we do? We meet, read together, and we make an art project each week.
Dates: Time: 4:30-5:30 PM for 4 Thursdays on the following dates:
10/19, 10/26. 11/2, 11/9
*We ask Big Buddies to arrive 15 minutes early to gather books to read with their buddy*
Registration required. When you register you sign up for all four Book Buddies dates!
New Buddies must attend a 45 minute orientation.
Choose one date to attend:
Thursday, October 5, 4:00-4:45 pm** Slightly earlier time**
Or Thursday, October 12, 4:30-5:15 pm
New Big Buddies or past Virtual Big Buddies: need to take the in person orientation. You will go through a quick training which includes learning the layout out the Children’s floor and where to find the best books for your Little Buddy.
If you were a Spring ’23 or Spring ’22 or Fall ’22 Big Buddy: you don’t need an orientation.

Fall 2021 Virtual Book Buddies sign up for Big Buddies!

Time: 4:00-5:00 PM
Dates: Thursday October 21, 28, November 4, 18
(No meeting on November 11). Check your schedule that you can attend all 4 meetings!
Who can be a Big Buddy? Teens in Grades 7-12. This is a great way to get your volunteer hours if you love working with kids!
What is the Book Buddies program?
Teen volunteers, aka Big Buddies, read to their Little Buddies (Entering Grades K-3 ).
Little Buddies also get to practice their reading skills by reading to their Big Buddies. Little Buddies get to grow a love of reading, practice their skills, and connect with teen big buddies. Everyone joins for the first 10 minutes or so of Book Buddies and play simple group games in Zoom. Buddies will have up to 40 minutes to read together in their own Breakout Rooms.
Things Big Buddies need:
-Be available: Thursday 10/21, 10/28, 11/4, 11/18 between 4:00-5:00 PM.
-Teens need a device (computer or laptop, iphone, Android phone, etc.) with Zoom downloaded AND a camera or webcam.
-A pack of at least 22 books (about 10 picture books, 10 beginning readers, and 2 chapter books) from the Avon Free Public Library. You can come any time the library is open to pick out your books!
