An Award Season Showcase: Best of 2023

Join us for a virtual film discussion series! View the films at home (check https://www.justwatch.com for options) and join us for a Zoom discussion led by Bob Kagan. For this series, most of the films will need to be streamed or purchased, as some titles are too new for the library collection, or may have a long hold list.

February 6, Oppenheimer: Directed by Christopher Nolen. Cillian  Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. are superb in this film chronicling  America’s efforts to develop the atomic bomb. Available at the library, or stream on Apple, Google Play, Amazon.

(We’ll host this discussion even if it snows/the library closes) February 13, Barbie, Directed by Greta Gerwig. To live in Barbie Land  is to be a perfect being in a perfect place unless you have an  existential crisis or you’re a Ken. The box office hit of the year is  surprisingly subversive as it tackles gender and power issues in  contemporary society. Available at the library, or stream on Max, Amazon.

February 20, Anatomy of a Fall: Directed by Justine Triet. In this  psychological thriller, a celebrated writer is put on trial when her  husband falls to his death from their secluded chalet. What starts as a  murder investigation soon becomes a gripping journey into the  depths of their marriage. Stream on Apple, Google Play, Amazon.

February 27, Past Lives, 2023, South Korea, Directed by Celine Song.  (Title change from Killers of the Flower Moon)

Two childhood sweethearts, after decades apart, are reunited for one fateful week in New York as they confront notions of destiny, love, and the choices that make a life in this heartrending modern romance. Available on Hoopla, and for rental on Amazon.

Bob Kagan was Chair of the Communication Department at Manchester Community College for 30 years.
