July/August Art Exhibit: The Photography of Stephen S. Myers
Our summer exhibit features the photography of the late Stephen S. Myers (1942-2024). Throughout his long and varied career, Stephen’s photography was published extensively in national magazines including LIFE, New York, Playboy, Harper’s, NOVA and many others. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Fenimore Art Museum, the American Museum of Natural History, and the Smithsonian Design Museum, just to name a few.
The exhibit in our Gallery has been carefully curated by Stephen’s son, Shepherd, and features a glimpse into the many different styles and periods of both his photography and life. Some of his earliest work depicts Soho in the 1960’s-70’s, including an incredible photo of the construction of the iconic World Trade Center. The Soho photos have a grit and sense of place that transports you to a NYC that no longer exists. Many of the photos depict the Alien Nomads Motorcycle Club (later becoming the Hells Angels) of which Stephen became the unofficial club photographer. The last group of photos feature seemingly idyllic scenes of rural life in Western NY, where Stephen relocated to when raising his children. Again, these photos speak to a time that feels both familiar and bygone at the same time.
This beautiful retrospective exhibit will be on display in our Gallery through the end of August.
