April 8 – The Graduate, 1967, Directed by Mike Nichols. Dustin Hoffman shines as an aimless college graduate caught between his older lover and her daughter. Anne Bancroft’s performance as Mrs. Robinson is one for the ages. Available from the library, or on Amazon.
April 15 – Being There, 1979, Directed by Hal Ashby. Peter Sellers stars as a simple-minded gardener who stumbles his way into the upper echelons of society as his non sequiturs and nonsensical comments are taken as a sign of genius and political savvy. Being There is considered more timely today than when it was released. Available from the library, or on Amazon.
April 22 – Cinema Paradiso, 1988. Directed by Giuseppe Tornatore. This Italian film centers around a young boy who develops a
friendship with the projectionist at the local cinema. This warm tale resonates for anyone who misses the communal experience of sitting in a dark room, filled with people, all transfixed by the flickering screen. Available from the library, or on Amazon.
April 29 – Lars and the Real Girl, 2007. Directed by Craig Gillespie. Ryan Gosling portrays a socially awkward young man who delights his family when he tells them he has found a girlfriend on the internet. While she turns out not to be quite what they expected, his family and neighbors are quick to accept the relationship. Funny, warm and poignant are all words used to describe this film. Available from the library, or on Amazon.
