Let’s Laugh: A Quartet of Comedies to Usher in the Fall Season

September 22 -The Producers, 1967. Directed by Mel Brooks. Zero Mostel, Gene Wilder and Dick Shawn star in this zany romp in which a Broadway Producer schemes to make money by producing a sure-fire flop. Brooks has no sacred cows as he redefines bad taste in a script that features music, great choreography and plenty of laughs. Available for from the library, or for rent on Amazon.

September 29 – Annie Hall, 1977. Directed by Woody Allen. Often cited as one of Allen’s finest works, Diane Keaton and Woody Allen star in this autobiographical film about relationships and lost love. Allen’s work has been canceled by many and this film is certain to spark a discussion about whether one can separate the art from the artist. Available for from the library, or for rent on Amazon.

October 6 – Best in Show, 2000. Directed by Christopher Guest. This mockumentary provides a behind-the-scenes look at the world of competitive dog shows. Eugene Levy, Fred Willard and Christopher Guest take us into a world where dog owners will do almost anything to hang a medal on their pooch. Available for from the library, or for rent on Amazon.

October 13 – Bridesmaids, 2011. Directed by Paul Feig, starring Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Rose Byrne. Slapstick fuses with vulnerability in this wedding comedy. Roger Ebert said the movie merges the Chick Flick genre with raunchy comedy. The perfect film to close out our series. Available from the library, or for rent on Amazon.

Bob Kagan taught Communications and film at Manchester Community College, Central Connecticut State University and the University of Hartford for over 40 years. He has been leading film discussions at the Avon Free Public Library for the past 8 years.
