“A recession is when your neighbor loses his job. A depression is when you lose yours.”
Depressions and crashes in US History
Depression, Crash, Recession, Downturn… what’s the difference? And why can’t we simply control the economy so that it never shrinks or fails?
Crashes are part and parcel of the American economic miracle. To some, these downturns are a necessary purging of waste and excess from our economy; to others, the cycle of boom and bust is a vicious master driving the employment that constitutes the well-being of millions of working-class Americans. This talk will explore crashes and depressions in our history, and how they have been countered… or not.
