The Women: Lit Lecture & Discussion with Dr. Aimee Pozorski (in-person)

Tuesday, June 3 at 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Join us for a literature lecture and discussion of The Women by Kristin Hannah.

“no women in Vietnam”: Bearing Witness to Women’s Service in Kristin Hannah’s The Women.

Kristin Hannah’s novel The Women (2024) ends with an author’s note describing Kristin’s process for writing the novel, a process that featured interviewing women who served in Vietnam. Many of these women, she writes, were often told there “were no women in Vietnam.” The Women corrects that misperception by giving voice to the women who served in Vietnam and reflecting on their experiences upon returning to the U.S. after the war. This discussion considers the significance of centering women’s experiences during war and helps place The Women in a canon of Vietnam War literature that largely excludes women, replicating the common adage that women had no place there.

Dr. Aimee Pozorski has authored Roth and Trauma: The Problem of History in the Later Works (Continuum, 2011), Falling After 9/11: Crisis in American Art and Literature (Bloomsbury, 2014), and AIDS-Trauma and Politics (Lexington, 2019).  She has edited or co-edited volumes on the topics of Philip Roth, American Modernism, and HIV/AIDS representation. With Maren Scheurer, she co-edited the peer-reviewed journal, Philip Roth Studies and co-edited the Bloomsbury Handbook to Philip Roth. She is Professor of English at Central Connecticut State University, and a regular presenter at the Avon Library!
